When home is far away, Hope Lodge is that home for cancer patients, their families, and caregivers at no cost. The American Cancer Society maintains 30 Hope Lodges across the United States and Puerto Rico to support those receiving cancer treatment in nearby hospitals. Originally designed by Bialosky in 1993 with future expansions in mind, Cleveland’s Hope Lodge resembles a large, Prairie-Style, single-family lodge to support peaceful recoveries.
Facing increased demands and waitlists, Hope Lodge re-engaged the design firm to master plan an expansion and renovation to serve more families on their cancer journey. To minimize disruption for residents, the project was phased to prioritize communal, shared spaces (Phase I), followed by creating a dozen additional patient-suites (Phase II, which is underway). Phase I respects the original, ornate red brick building with a compatible, modern addition, centered on a new dining pavilion. Envisioned as a pavilion in the park, the glassy, airy dining hall pulls in the outdoors, creating a peaceful, light-filled space. Warm woods in the flooring and millwork echo this sense of tranquil nature essential to relaxation and recovery. A special feature that makes Hope Lodge feel like home: Eight residential-scaled kitchens allow guests to plan and cook family meals. The design carefully balances these kitchens as clear, individual stations while threading them as part of the larger community space.
A new outdoor garden nestled between the two building extensions, with an elegant trellis overhead, defines the space as a new oasis for residents and their families to dine and unwind. Sitting in the courtyard on his last day at Hope Lodge, one resident and his wife shared for four months Hope Lodge was their home away from home: “This place has been such a blessing”.
