In 2021, The Port Authority awarded Robery Maschke and Bialosky the commission for a conceptual design to replace Black River Landing, a peformance stage in the heart of downtown Lorain, Ohio. Sited on the banks of the Black River, the popular venue aspired to reinvigorate the commercial district, elevate visitor experience, and connect downtown to the river.
The design improves flexibility for diverse acts and activities, introduces transformative landscape, and increases visibility with iconic architectural moves – notably a seemingly weightless stage canopy. Beyond the stage itself, support facilities for concert and festival activities are a part of a functional, efficient plan. As staff and board members collaborated on the project, a concept emerged to extend the site up to downtown, creating a visible and direct pedestrian link from Main Street down to the river, which was previously obscured. The design amplifies walkability from the city’s core to a lively waterfront destination.
