Ready…Set…GO!!! Bialosky + Partners Architects at the RACE FOR THE PLACE!

Bialosky + Partners' employees and their families will be participating in the annual “RACE FOR THE PLACE” on Sunday June 2.  This is an annual 5K Race/1 mile Walk held at Beachwood Place to benefit The Gathering Place. The Gathering Place is an awesome, LOCAL non-profit organization whose sole purpose is to offer support for anyone whose life has been touched by cancer. Their mission is to provide programs and services that focus on the emotional, social, physical and spiritual needs of individuals with cancer as well as their support network of family and friends. All their services are offered absolutely 100% free of charge and include cancer support groups, resource libraries and support staff, tai chi and yoga classes, nutritional classes, art and massage therapies, wig salon and an extensive array of children’s programs. Again, everything they do is provided at no charge!  In order to do this, the Gathering Place holds a series of fundraising events throughout the year, but none is bigger or brings in more funding than the RACE!

The RACE is held annually on the first Sunday in June, which is National Cancer Survivors Day.  Details regarding the event can be found at:  http://www.touchedbycancer.org/support-us/racefortheplace/

Bialosky + Partners became involved with the Gathering Place in 2000 when they opened their doors to the public for the first time. Since then, we’ve designed their headquarters in Beachwood, OH on Commerce Park Drive and their satellite facility in Westlake, OH on Sharon Drive. We have worked alongside Landscape Architect Virginia Burt of Visionscapes on the breathtaking Healing Garden at their Beachwood location and continue to support them through our architectural talents and resources. As a result, our team has grown very close to the amazing Gathering Place staff over the years and consider them our friends and family.  We are excited to take part in their annual fundraiser and hope to raise a considerable donation! Please feel free to either join our team for this year’s RACE or make a one-time donation. Your donation goes directly to programs and resources that support their mission. Promotions At Bialosky: Associate

Bialosky + Partners Architects is proud to announce a number of exciting promotions! Over the next few days check here for feature posts highlighting all of our newly promoted team members!

Today we are highlighting our newest Associate, Matt MacRaild.

Matt MacRaild

Matt MacRaild, Associate AIA started full-time with our team in May of 2010. While born in Northeast Ohio, Matt fled to St. Louis for college, attending Washington University. Matt received a Bachelor of Science in Architecture with a Business minor in 2003, a Masters of Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing and Finance from the Olin School of Business at Washington University in 2007 and in 2009 he received a Masters of Architecture and Masters of Urban Design, both from the Sam Fox School of Visual Arts and Design at Washington University. Matt is an active AIA member, where he is the committee chair of the AIA Cleveland Urban Design Committee as well as a member of the Northeast Ohio Revit User’s Group, chairing the marketing committee. He has coached JV soccer at West Geauga High School and organizes the West Geauga Athletic Boosters Annual Trivia Night. In his spare time, which we assume is from midnight to 4am, Matt is an active member in many digital design related forums and blogs throughout the internet. We know this is true, because more than once BPA-ers have googled a question about a rendering program question and Matt has answered it – on an online forum 3 years ago.

Matt prides himself on his work ethic, which is clear in his work on projects such as the Lorain Community College Culinary and Creative Arts Center, Intesa (Lot 45 - University Circle), the Kent State University CAED Competition, and clients such as Merit Brass.

While Matt likes Cleveland well enough, if he was to take the office on a field trip, we would go to Barcelona and Bilbao, Spain. Having spent a summer there in grad school Matt found the history of Spain from the Roman Empire to Gaudi juxtaposed with the more recent work of Miralles, Meier, Gehry, Calatrava, and FOA all works in consort with each other to create a beautifully dynamic place. On the plane ride to Spain, Matt would have us all read a book authored by his classmate from Wash U, Eric Cesal- Down Detour Road, which does a good job of describing the landscape of our profession in such a way that anyone in the field can understand the interplay, contradictions, and concessions between business and design that we all face as designers.

Congratulations, Matt!

Our Final Design, was inspired by both the historic location of this year’s event and Alice in Wonderland, our primary objective was to create something theatrical and eye catching. We selected an array of textiles in blues, blacks, and grays from our sponsor, Steelcase. The bodice was made using a black and white striped panel fabric. Fifteen different fabrics were cut into circles, sewn into over 850+ rosettes, and attached in an ombre fashion to create our volumes base. We also had several accessories including a bow made of scrim and resin jewelry created by Erica Hoosic.

Bike Cleveland Planning Charrette

This past weekend, Bialosky + Partners hosted key members from cycling advocacy organization, Bike Cleveland, for a charrette to kick off the design process for a conceptual proposal of a separated cycle track network in the city of Cleveland. Bialosky + Partners is providing pro-bono planing and design services for the initial conceptual design of the project.

What is a separated cycle track? Let's let The Bicycle Network tell us:

Separated bike lanes provide a physical separation of bike riders from motor vehicles on a road. The physical separation makes the bike lane more comfortable for a wider range of people who want to ride their bikes than a painted bike lane.

In the case of Cleveland, our team is working on a proposal to reclaim right of ways in streets around the city of Cleveland that were home to street cars decades ago, before they were removed during America's post WW-II shift to a car orientated society. Many streets in Cleveland are not as wide as they are because there was a traffic demand that necessitated that width, even when the city population was 900,000 in the 1950s. Instead it was because the cheapest and easiest solution was to pave over the lines and add more car lanes when streetcar lines were removed. The current traffic counts the Bike Cleveland team have are only a small percentage of the potential capacity for many of these former streetcar streets. Many streets in Cleveland are ripe for a road diet. The Cleveland Separated Cycle Track Network seeks to reclaim these right of ways, previously used by street cars, and return these streets to their historic use of providing multi-modal transportation options to the public.

See some photos from Saturday's design charrette and stay tuned for farther updates on this exciting project!
