Bialosky’s Community-Focused Architecture Earns Design Awards

The 2019 AIA Cleveland Design Awards at Hilton Downtown attracted a record number of 535 attendees to celebrate, inspire, and honor design excellence. Two community-centric projects, Metro Campus Center and Cleveland Public Library’s Facilities Master Plan earned Tri-C multiple honors.

Jury Chair, Lawrence Scarpa, FAIA cited that while master plans are very difficult to judge, the CPL Master Plan’s intent to give clear design guidelines for an entire library network is commendable.

Hallie Crouch, Assoc. AIA was individually honored with the Activism Award for championing equity in the profession and making architecture more accessible to the public.

An Antiquated Fortress Becomes a New Campus Beacon

Once an impermeable fortress set in a sunken court, Cuyahoga Community College's Metro Campus Center was the most disengaged building on the urban campus. Discarding a brutalist identity, it is now the central heart of the campus and community, bringing truth to the name “Campus Center.” The design strategy: to connect and activate. Shedding its heavy masonry skin, the building form is softened, transparent, organic. It is a beacon that welcomes all.

Vote for Campus Center as the People's Choice for AIA Cleveland's 2019 Design Awards.

School’s in Session: Cleveland College of Engineering Expansion

Seeking to develop a new model for engineering education, Cleveland State University and Bialosky Cleveland collaborated on the design of innovative laboratories, classrooms, and student spaces for the Washkewicz College of Engineering.

In order to strike a balance between the professor’s and the university’s needs, the design includes three sizes of flexible, state-of-the-art lab spaces that can be customized to the class or student’s needs. The labs consist of fixed appliances and plumbing along perimeter walls, enabling the lab benches and mobile equipment to be placed anywhere in the center of the room without modifications to the layout. In addition to being flexible, the design prioritizes transparency. With floor-to-ceiling glass walls, the amazing work taking place in the labs is showcased to all attending or visiting the college.

When bright CSU students populate the labs this fall, they will have all of the tools they need to advance their research in chemical, biomedical, and material sciences; robotics; automation; and simulation.

Cleveland Public Library Adopts a Ten Year System Wide Master Plan

Reflecting on its 150-year history, Cleveland Public Library (CPL) engaged with Bialosky Cleveland to develop a Facilities Master Plan to chart the bright future ahead.  The master plan, presented as a graphically rich 400-page book, sets new design principles, explores case studies of specific branches, compounds local and global statistics, and inspires a holistic vision for CPL. The plan is organized around a deliberately planned network of branch types (S, M, L, and XL) and thoroughly considered the best option for each individual branch: renovation, expansion, consolidation, or relocation.

Unanimously approved by CPL’s Board, the master plan is moving into implementation of Phase One. Budgeted at over $60 million it will include re-imagining 14 of the library’s branches over the next five years, with the remaining 13 to follow in phase two. In June, the master plan document was recognized as “Best Print Campaign” at the 2019 SMPS Northeast Ohio Awards.
