Ready…Set…GO!!! Bialosky + Partners Architects at the RACE FOR THE PLACE!

Bialosky + Partners' employees and their families will be participating in the annual “RACE FOR THE PLACE” on Sunday June 2.  This is an annual 5K Race/1 mile Walk held at Beachwood Place to benefit The Gathering Place. The Gathering Place is an awesome, LOCAL non-profit organization whose sole purpose is to offer support for anyone whose life has been touched by cancer. Their mission is to provide programs and services that focus on the emotional, social, physical and spiritual needs of individuals with cancer as well as their support network of family and friends. All their services are offered absolutely 100% free of charge and include cancer support groups, resource libraries and support staff, tai chi and yoga classes, nutritional classes, art and massage therapies, wig salon and an extensive array of children’s programs. Again, everything they do is provided at no charge!  In order to do this, the Gathering Place holds a series of fundraising events throughout the year, but none is bigger or brings in more funding than the RACE!

The RACE is held annually on the first Sunday in June, which is National Cancer Survivors Day.  Details regarding the event can be found at:  http://www.touchedbycancer.org/support-us/racefortheplace/

Bialosky + Partners became involved with the Gathering Place in 2000 when they opened their doors to the public for the first time. Since then, we’ve designed their headquarters in Beachwood, OH on Commerce Park Drive and their satellite facility in Westlake, OH on Sharon Drive. We have worked alongside Landscape Architect Virginia Burt of Visionscapes on the breathtaking Healing Garden at their Beachwood location and continue to support them through our architectural talents and resources. As a result, our team has grown very close to the amazing Gathering Place staff over the years and consider them our friends and family.  We are excited to take part in their annual fundraiser and hope to raise a considerable donation! Please feel free to either join our team for this year’s RACE or make a one-time donation. Your donation goes directly to programs and resources that support their mission. Save Fifth Church in Cleveland’s Edgewater Neighborhood

Bialosky + Partners Architects are proud to be working with Neighbors In Action who are working to save portions of the Fifth Church of Christ Scientist, located at West 117th St and Lake Avenue in the city of Cleveland's Edgewater neighborhood.  It is unknown if the church will be saved as it is part of a larger redevelopment project, The Shoppes On Clifton.

Fifth Church, which has been standing for 87 years, has been left vacant for many years - and effectively left open to the weather, significantly deteriorating its condition. Bialosky + Partners have worked on many proposals with developers on this site over the years, most thoroughly being a project called "Landmark Square" in 2002 with Cleveland Urban Properties, LTD, Samstel Investment Group in conjunction with Marous Brothers Construction.

Neighbors In Action, an independent group of concerned residents from the Edgewater and Cudell neighborhoods engaged Bialosky + Partners to help develop alternative proposals for potential re-uses of Fifth Church based on our previous work in the neighborhood and on development proposals for this specific site. Drawing and design efforts were lead by Bialosky + Partners, Partner Emeritus, Jack Bialosky Sr., who was recently featured in Freshwater Cleveland.

Our Final Design, was inspired by both the historic location of this year’s event and Alice in Wonderland, our primary objective was to create something theatrical and eye catching. We selected an array of textiles in blues, blacks, and grays from our sponsor, Steelcase. The bodice was made using a black and white striped panel fabric. Fifteen different fabrics were cut into circles, sewn into over 850+ rosettes, and attached in an ombre fashion to create our volumes base. We also had several accessories including a bow made of scrim and resin jewelry created by Erica Hoosic.

New Service Department for Orange Village to Open Fall 2013

This fall, Orange Village, OH will have a brand new service department on Lander Road. The new 12,800 sf facility and 3,200 sf salt building will support the village’s service department, and provide a maintenance faculty for the service, fire and police vehicles.  Flexibility and efficiency were key design factors, which led to a timber frame pole structure. Notice in the construction photos, this structure allows the spaces to be free of columns that boast a versatile /open interior. As for sustainability, this type of pole construction also has the advantage of an energy efficient building shell, and the site itself encompasses bio-retention.

The project is now under construction alongside the city's existing Municipal Center. A few designers from office buckled up their boots, and visited the site Monday to see the large-spanning trusses installed (see the video if you couldn't visit the site).

Interior Designers Go Haute Couture for Product Runway 2013

T minus three weeks for the couture competition event of the year - Product Runway. Presented by the International Interior Design Association (IIDA), the competition challenges interior designers, architects and artists to test their creativity and technical skills by transforming interior finish materials (such as upholstery, ceramic tile, and laminates) into runway-fashion. This theatrical show of haute couture at the State Theater May 3rd 2013, will be judged by a prestigious panel, that includes fashion icon Cheryl Tiegs, deemed “America’s First Supermodel”. Bialosky + Partners is not only a participant but also is a proud sponsor of this event which raises money for Harvest for Hunger!

This year's Product Runway will rock the State Theater here in Cleveland May 3rd. http://www.iidaohky.org

Competition:

The Ohio/Kentucky Chapter has 16 competing teams, including a team from our office, who will compete in 5 categories: (1) Best in Show (2) Most Wearable (3) Haute Couture (4) Fit & Finish and (5) People’s Choice (one vote is $1).

Team and Inspiration:

Our team, Mandisa Gosa (Bialosky + Partners), Sandy Weigel (Bialosky + Partners), Hallie DelVillan (Bialosky + Partners), Raina Hooper (Ohio Desk), and Hannelore Berken (Independent Artist & Published Poet), are constructing a dress inspired by both the State Theater (which once-upon-a-time, was a vaudeville/movie house filled with magic) and the fantastical wonderland of Alice. We followed the rabbit hole to a time and place where the two theatrical motifs overlapped. This garment, Through the Looking Glass, boldly explores the melding of Alice in a whole new world. We're in the process of constructing the dress over the next few weeks so- fellow BPAers, you can ask a team member for a sneak peek! Jewelry crafted from translucent resin samples are created by the talented Erica Hoosic.

Materials: Choosing a palette of blacks, charcoals, and blues, our materials from Steelcase products are rich in texture and variety. The base of this dress is composed of 850+ hand-cut circles folded into rosettes.
