Promotions At Bialosky: Associate

Bialosky + Partners Architects is proud to announce a number of exciting promotions! Over the next few days check here for feature posts highlighting all of our newly promoted team members!

Today we are highlighting our newest Associate, Matt MacRaild.

Matt MacRaild

Matt MacRaild, Associate AIA started full-time with our team in May of 2010. While born in Northeast Ohio, Matt fled to St. Louis for college, attending Washington University. Matt received a Bachelor of Science in Architecture with a Business minor in 2003, a Masters of Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing and Finance from the Olin School of Business at Washington University in 2007 and in 2009 he received a Masters of Architecture and Masters of Urban Design, both from the Sam Fox School of Visual Arts and Design at Washington University. Matt is an active AIA member, where he is the committee chair of the AIA Cleveland Urban Design Committee as well as a member of the Northeast Ohio Revit User’s Group, chairing the marketing committee. He has coached JV soccer at West Geauga High School and organizes the West Geauga Athletic Boosters Annual Trivia Night. In his spare time, which we assume is from midnight to 4am, Matt is an active member in many digital design related forums and blogs throughout the internet. We know this is true, because more than once BPA-ers have googled a question about a rendering program question and Matt has answered it – on an online forum 3 years ago.

Matt prides himself on his work ethic, which is clear in his work on projects such as the Lorain Community College Culinary and Creative Arts Center, Intesa (Lot 45 - University Circle), the Kent State University CAED Competition, and clients such as Merit Brass.

While Matt likes Cleveland well enough, if he was to take the office on a field trip, we would go to Barcelona and Bilbao, Spain. Having spent a summer there in grad school Matt found the history of Spain from the Roman Empire to Gaudi juxtaposed with the more recent work of Miralles, Meier, Gehry, Calatrava, and FOA all works in consort with each other to create a beautifully dynamic place. On the plane ride to Spain, Matt would have us all read a book authored by his classmate from Wash U, Eric Cesal- Down Detour Road, which does a good job of describing the landscape of our profession in such a way that anyone in the field can understand the interplay, contradictions, and concessions between business and design that we all face as designers.

Congratulations, Matt!

Our Final Design, was inspired by both the historic location of this year’s event and Alice in Wonderland, our primary objective was to create something theatrical and eye catching. We selected an array of textiles in blues, blacks, and grays from our sponsor, Steelcase. The bodice was made using a black and white striped panel fabric. Fifteen different fabrics were cut into circles, sewn into over 850+ rosettes, and attached in an ombre fashion to create our volumes base. We also had several accessories including a bow made of scrim and resin jewelry created by Erica Hoosic.

Interior Designers Go Haute Couture for Product Runway 2013

T minus three weeks for the couture competition event of the year - Product Runway. Presented by the International Interior Design Association (IIDA), the competition challenges interior designers, architects and artists to test their creativity and technical skills by transforming interior finish materials (such as upholstery, ceramic tile, and laminates) into runway-fashion. This theatrical show of haute couture at the State Theater May 3rd 2013, will be judged by a prestigious panel, that includes fashion icon Cheryl Tiegs, deemed “America’s First Supermodel”. Bialosky + Partners is not only a participant but also is a proud sponsor of this event which raises money for Harvest for Hunger!

This year's Product Runway will rock the State Theater here in Cleveland May 3rd. http://www.iidaohky.org

Competition:

The Ohio/Kentucky Chapter has 16 competing teams, including a team from our office, who will compete in 5 categories: (1) Best in Show (2) Most Wearable (3) Haute Couture (4) Fit & Finish and (5) People’s Choice (one vote is $1).

Team and Inspiration:

Our team, Mandisa Gosa (Bialosky + Partners), Sandy Weigel (Bialosky + Partners), Hallie DelVillan (Bialosky + Partners), Raina Hooper (Ohio Desk), and Hannelore Berken (Independent Artist & Published Poet), are constructing a dress inspired by both the State Theater (which once-upon-a-time, was a vaudeville/movie house filled with magic) and the fantastical wonderland of Alice. We followed the rabbit hole to a time and place where the two theatrical motifs overlapped. This garment, Through the Looking Glass, boldly explores the melding of Alice in a whole new world. We're in the process of constructing the dress over the next few weeks so- fellow BPAers, you can ask a team member for a sneak peek! Jewelry crafted from translucent resin samples are created by the talented Erica Hoosic.

Materials: Choosing a palette of blacks, charcoals, and blues, our materials from Steelcase products are rich in texture and variety. The base of this dress is composed of 850+ hand-cut circles folded into rosettes.

Event Details:

When: May 3rd, 5:30pm - 11:00pm

Where: State Theater: 1519 Euclid Ave. Cleveland 44115

Market Square, the next exciting phase of  Crocker Park, has been approved by the City of Westlake. This civic space provides various types of events throughout the year, and ultimately is a place where culture and life can be shared amongst the community. WKYC Cleveland visited our offices Friday to sit down with architect and planner David Craun to learn more about the developments of this project. Construction should begin in 2014.

Bialosky + Partners Wins a Title at Cleveland Canstruction!

The Bialosky + Partners Architects CANstruction team would like to thank our sponsors for their generous donations.  Thanks to their help we were able to raise over $4,500 and purchase over 5,500 cans of food to donate to the Cleveland Foodbank during their Harvest for Hunger Campaign!

Freshly loaded off of the Uhaul, Bialosky's can-count was the highest among the teams with 5,500+ cans of food for Harvest for Hunger.

Freshly loaded off of the truck, Bialosky's can-count was the highest among the teams with 5,500+ cans of food for Harvest for Hunger.

With this year’s theme of “Cleveland Rocks”, our team created a can replica of the Cleveland Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) – the newest architectural “gem” in Cleveland.  Architecture and monuments circling around culture become precious rocks in our region- buildings such as MOCA renew and unite Cleveland. It’s these attitudes that are the “meat and potatoes” in fighting hunger. Luckily, this 5,500+ can structure has not only meat chili, and white potatoes, but also a variety of vegetables, organic black beans, tuna, pork & beans, and beef stew.

The BPA team was awarded the term “Can-Spirit” by the judges for the most enthusiasm and most cans donated by a single team.
