The City of Euclid has achieved what few other communities along Lake Erie have attempted in taking back a stretch of the lakefront for public use. After a dozen years of planning and phased implementation, the Euclid Waterfront Trail now connects Sims Park near Downtown to a new Paddle Craft Beach three-quarters of a mile to the east. The final phase of public waterfront improvements envisions a new beach house facility along the lake edge bluff and a new upland park connecting back to Lakeshore Boulevard. Project goals are to create a regional attraction with a full-service restaurant, provide year-round public amenities to the waterfront, include discrete municipal service facilities, and model a sustainable design that is resilient to climate change and flexible with future programming.
The steering committee wanted a building form that creates a visual terminus to the waterfront trail down below while being highly visible from the upland park above. This led to the design of a three-level tiered structure embedded into the bluff above the beach with panoramic views out to the lake. The design team amplified the unique positioning of the beach house on the bluff with an oversized folded wing-like roof plane over a delicate glass pavilion that is eye catching from the park and serves as a dramatic focal point from the waterfront trail.
Program organization of the building resulted in an open public level at the top, a public/private level with a restaurant and municipal service functions in the middle, and utility level with paddle craft rental and support functions that can sustain wave runup conditions at the bottom. Tiered outdoor public spaces reinforce the form and function of the building with a lakeview patio on the top level with bar access, a picnic terrace on the middle level with public amenities, and a convenient connection to the waterfront trail and paddle craft beach on the lower level. Phase III improvements for the upland park will be underway in the spring of 2023 to support the future beach house with vehicular access, public parking, underground utilities, and a multi-modal trail down to the waterfront.
