The current Brooklyn Branch of the Cuyahoga County Library was built in 1992 and has not had a significant renovation since its opening. As the facility ages, it also falls behind in the type and quality of amenities and services libraries now typically provides. As Brooklyn residents consider their library as an important aspect of their community’s identity, CCPL recognized the need to replace the facility and worked with Bialosky to do so.
With the City of Brooklyn currently building new facilities of its own along Memphis Avenue, the opportunity exists to work with the City to incorporate the new library into the Civic Campus and thus centralize civic functions and amenities. Incorporating the library into this Civic Campus will concentrate civic uses in one area and could potentially help provide an anchor attraction to support neighborhood-scale commercial development.
The new 25,000sf Brooklyn branch will be heavily focused on technology, with an Innovation/Makers Space and a Digital Learning Lab. Driven by the needs of the community expressed through various rounds of engagement, the new library will feature a variety of flexible meeting and learning spaces that will allow Brooklyn residents to benefit from more technology training, GED classes and interactive STEAM programs for K-12 students.
