02 – Black River – PORT

Black River Landing brings a new performance amphitheater to the heart of downtown Lorain, Ohio. Set on the banks of the Black River, the venue was conceived to reinvigorate the commercial district and elevate the visitor experience as audiences returned to live entertainment. Bialosky led the project in collaboration with Robert Maschke Architects as Design Architect.

The design expands flexibility for a wide range of acts and activities, introduces a transformative landscape, and raises the venue's presence through bold architectural moves - most notably a stage canopy that appears to float, weightless, above the performers. Behind the scenes, support facilities for concerts and festivals are woven into an efficient, highly functional plan.

As staff and board members shaped the project together, an idea took hold: to extend the site upward into downtown, forging a direct, visible pedestrian link from Main Street down to a river that had long been hidden from view. The result amplifies walkability from the city's core to a lively new waterfront destination.
